He immediately realized what had happened, that the two groups ahead of him had already dropped their bombs. A surprise attack was no longer possible. The Germans were fully alerted and ready for them. The situation was critical.

They were approaching Ploesti very fast, thanks to a tail wind, and Kane had only seconds to make his decision: proceed with the attack as planned, though fire and smoke would quickly surround them, or abort the mission and head for home.

A writer later noted, “To this day many people believe that Kane should have turned back. The dangers to bomb- and gas-laden planes flying into high-reaching flames, barrage balloons and billowing smoke at such low altitudes was enormous.” Besides, the target had already been attacked.
