He immediately realized what had happened, that the two groups ahead of him had already dropped their bombs. A surprise attack was no longer possible. The Germans were fully alerted and ready for them. The situation was critical.

They were approaching Ploesti very fast, thanks to a tail wind, and Kane had only seconds to make his decision: proceed with the attack as planned, though fire and smoke would quickly surround them, or abort the mission and head for home.

A writer later noted, “To this day many people believe that Kane should have turned back. The dangers to bomb- and gas-laden planes flying into high-reaching flames, barrage balloons and billowing smoke at such low altitudes was enormous.” Besides, the target had already been attacked. Was it worth the risk to try to hit it again?
